Burberry back to the London Fashion Week

26. May 2009 15:25

The fashion house which has been dubbed the "quintessentially British firm", will have its catwalk showing London come September, it has been announced today.  Burberry used to be showing at Milan, Italy before. This moves follows a recent trend of well-known British designers, sometimes irritated by the turn the London Fashion Week was taking, who had been showing or exposing abroad before being convinced to get back to their British roots like Vivienne Westwood, Matthew Williamson, Luella.

The showing of the Prorsum label of the brand in London this September is hailed as "the right moment, the right time to do this" by Christopher Bailey, creative director of Burberry. It is when he took over in 2001, that Prorsum moved to Milan. But since the firm's new headquarters opening in London, and as both the British Fashion Council and the London Fashion Week's 25th birthday are being celebrated, one can indeed understand how the time seems right.

Bailey was following several of his peers in British fashion when raving about London's newfound creative atmosphere paradoxically revived while the economic crisis looms :

"It felt like a good time to celebrate. There is amazing energy in London. Our design office is based here and there is wonderful creativity from the arts, design, film and literature."

Nonetheless, nobody knew if this return would be permanent as we are in unstable times. Bailey himself was uncertain :

"We've not really thought about what will happen afterwards," he said. "We think season by season. It's not a definite yes but we're not ruling it out. Contrary to common belief, these things are instinctive."

So prepare to see Burberry, this typically British heritage brand, back at the closing of the London Fashion week on September 22 with its Spring/Summer 2010 collection!

Sarah Mower, 1st ever Ambassador for Emerging Fashion Talent

23. May 2009 15:37

Two days ago, on Thursday, May 21, the British Fashion Council has appointed a Fashion journalist and columnist for the Daily Telegraph, Sarah Mower as Ambassador for Emerging Talents (in Fashion obviously).

The lady is the very first to occupy this newly created position, as part of the re-structuring Council as the London Fashion Week hits the 25th year mark!

Ms Mower's role will consist mainly in chairing the BFC's NewGen committee, which, as its name hints, discuss and distributes sponsoring to Britain's most talented young designers and fahion graduates so as to help them build their reputation. Here's why many consider Mower particularly suited to the job : she happens to have a strong international experience -and certainly network of relations now- through her work with Style.com, and Vogue US in the past, to name but a few.

Her comments on her appointment were full of positivity and optimism, despite the current economic downturn :

"I'm honoured to be asked to take up this role on behalf of emerging designers. In Britain we have a phenomenon on our hands at the moment: a uniquely vibrant, varied and collaborative flowering of talent that is some of the most exciting on the world stage. It's a tough economy, but I believe the inspired and beautifully-made clothes our designers are producing now gives young London an opportunity to shine."

Exciting for the UK's fashion scene!
