2009 Costume MET Gala

10. May 2009 12:28

Manhattan's equivalent to the Oscars in terms of glamour is the Metropolitan Museum of Arts' Costume Institute annual Gala. This huge event just took place in New York on Monday 4th May. It drew an immense crowd of A-listers (or wanabe A-listers...) while designers and couturiers rivalised in imagination to produce the most lavish and original dresses and outfits for the celebrities in attendance.

This year's theme was 'The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion’, a way of celebrating 50 years of the supermodel through an eponymous exposition to be held at the MET till August 9. Bronwyn Cosgrave in the Telegraph, claims that the Costume Institute's exhibitions have come to be a strong influence on fashion trends. This phenomenon called the "Met Buzz" has shown its effect when after the highly successful 'Goddess' and 'Poiret : King of Fashion' exhibitions respectively in 2003 and May 2007, collections of all the big couture houses as well as high street chains were strongly inspired by the Grecian dresses and Exotica-themed piece of clothing they featured in the following seasons.

The endless list of celebrities now making the rounds on the numerous best-dressed and worst-dressed lists of fashion magazines and blogs with their style being scrutinized is very impressive : Top Shop Muse Kate Moss in a golden lamé one-shoulder dress by Marc Jacobs, Anne Hathaway in Marc Jacobs as well, Liv Tyler, 2008 Academy Award Winner Marion Cotillard in a lovely peach Dior dress flanked by John Galliano, Gisele Bundchen in Dior too, Ashley Olsen in her own backless creation, Jessica Alba, Gossip Girl star Blake Lively, Kate Hudson who went for gold too and many more...

Who dressed best, who dressed worst? Check them out and give us your thoughts!
